The spotting drill, as the name suggests, is a short-cutting-edge drill bit specifically designed for machining precise pilot holes and center holes on workpieces. It is an indispensable preparatory tool in machining, particularly in CNC machining centers and turn-mill centers.

Its primary purpose is not to drill deep holes, but to pre-drill a shallow, conical hole with precise location and excellent guiding properties on the workpiece surface. This shallow hole provides a perfect starting point and guide for subsequent tools like twist drills, reamers, or taps, ensuring they do not "walk" or deviate at the beginning of the cutting operation.

3.  Extended Drill Bit Life:The cutting speed at the chisel edge of a twist drill is nearly zero; it primarily cuts through extrusion, subjecting it to immense force and rapid wear during the initial stage. The spotting drill preemptively removes this "hard nut" for the twist drill, allowing it to start cutting effectively with its full cutting edges from the beginning.
